• mp3D integrated in the decoder for improved quality play back of mp3 stereo and mp3 Surround over stereo headphones
• Stand-alone mp3 Stereo eXtended (mp3 SX) converter: Upgrades regular mp3 stereo files into mp3 Surround files. For these files an mp3 Surround v2 or higher decoder is required; for stereo play back any mp3 player can be used.

mp3 Surround enables high-quality surround sound at bit rates comparable to those currently used to encode stereo mp3 material. It is backwards compatible to stereo mp3; a legacy mp3 device plays back mp3 Surround as high quality stereo.

mp3D is a supplement to mp3 Surround decoder which improves the headphones playback of stereo mp3 files. While playing back mp3 surround files a spatial image is reproduced even on stereo headphones. More information about this latest development by Fraunhofer IIS is available here.

mp3 SX converts two-channel content into surround. mp3 SX achieves a stable localization of vocalists and solo instruments even off the sweet spot. Additionally, mp3 SX presents the feeling of envelopment by analyzing the ambience sounds already present in the stereo source. mp3 SX supports a seamless transition from stereo to surround sound.
